What happens at an online AA meeting?
Short answer: About an hour. Someone opens the meeting, a few readings are shared, then people take turns talking about their experience. You can just listen.
- Opening: many meetings start with the Serenity Prayer and short readings.
- Newcomers: often welcomed and invited to say a first name — optional.
- The main part: a speaker shares their story, or the group discusses a topic or a reading. People usually talk for a few minutes each.
- The chat box: people post greetings, phone numbers to call, or links to readings.
- Donations: groups may share a way to contribute — always optional; newcomers aren't expected to give.
- Coming late or leaving early is fine.
- Small vs. big: small meetings tend to greet new faces and may ask you a question; in bigger ones you can sit quietly.
